Fun fact about Cape Carteret = While the town was incorporated in 1959, the bridge over the sound to Emerald Isle was not completed until 1971.  From 1961 to 1971 the State of North Carolina ran a ferry service from the end of Lejeune Road across the Bogue Sound.  The dredging  of the channel used to allow these ferries to run is credited to the town's founding father, William McLean.  McLean was a man of action and he and two business partners are also credited for the purchase of a farm that was developed into Star Hill Golf Club complete with a landing strip running right down the middle of the course (which is still visible on satellite view maps!).
